Instant Callenge #22 - CRAWLING AWAY (Task-based)

Challenge: Create a museum display of an insect.

Time: You will have up to 7 minutes to use your imagination to create a museum display of an insect, and up to 2 minutes to explain why your insect is so special.

The Scene: You and your teammates are on a scientific expedition in South America, studying the animals there. You come across an insect (a bug or a spider) that no one has ever seen before! You need to put the insect in a special package and send it to your scientist friends back home so they can put it in a museum.

Using only the materials on the table, create an insect and a special package to display your insect. The package should display the insect, and it must also show some unusual thing about the insect that makes it special (like what it eats or how old it gets). You want the whole world to kno what a special insect you have discovered!

Materials:
4  pipe cleaners
1  sheet paper
4  rubber bands
10  toothpicks
1  paper cup
4  mailing labels
1  small box of raisins
2  large paper clips
6  colored pencils (May be used to work with the materials, but not to be used in the final solution)

Scoring: You will receive:
A.  Up to 40 points for the creativity of the insect.
B.  Up to 20 points for the creativity of the package.
C.  Up to 20 points for the creativity of the insect's special characteristic.
D.  Up to 20 points for how well your team works together.

Instant Challenge #21 - CLAY-O-MATION (team-created props)

Challenge: Create a comic strip or humorous storyboard.

Time: Your team will have 5 minutes to create your solution.

The Scene: Using clay and index cards, your team must create a humorous 3-D storyboard or comic strip. The story must have at least 4 frames but may have as many frames as necessary to complete the story. Clay is the only other materials that may be used to illustrate the story.

Materials:
4 index cards
1 large piece of clay

Scoring: You will receive:
A.  Up to 25 points for the creativity of the story.
B.  Up to 50 points for creative use of materials.
C.  Up to 25 points for teamwork.

Instant Challenge #29 - WARNING! WARNING! (Team-created props)

Challenge: Build a warning device and create a scene in which the device is used.

Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your imagination to build your device and plan your scene and up to 2 minutes to present your scene and device.

The Scene: Your team has just been hired by the Bells and Whistles engineering firm, specializing in warning systems. Their newest client, Mr. Gotrocks, has commissioned you to design a warning device for his top secret project. You team must create the warning device and demonstrate to Mr. Gotrocks how it will help prevent disaster for his particular top secret project.

Materials:
12" of aluminum foil
1 balloon
1 twist tie
1 paper bag
Scissors (may be used to work with the materials, but may not be used in the solution)

Scoring: You will receive:
A.  Up to 20 points for the creativity of the warning device.
B.  Up to 20 points for the creativity of the top secret project
C.  Up to 20 points for how creatively you use the materials.
D.  Up to 20 points or the humor of your presentation.
E.  Up to 20 points for how well your team works together.

Instant Challenge #19 - CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE DI KIND (Performance-based with props)

Challenge: The team will perform a skit about what aliens think about the people here on Earth.

Time: You will have 5 minutes to prepare your skit and 3 minutes to present.

The Scene: Your group is a team of aliens in charge of observing the people here on Earth. Use the materials provided for props, and prepare a pesentation for your leader. You will need to show your leader some funny things about the people here on Earth.

Materials:
1  ice cube tray
4  mailing labels
2  6"x6" aluminum foil
4  sheets 8.5"x11" paper
2  paper bags
1  6" PVC pipe  (remember, you may substitute other items for things you don't have)
2  12" strings
6  toothpicks
2 pencils may be used to work with the materials, but may not be used in the final solution.

Scoring: You will receive:
A. 2 points for each different type of material you use in your performance.
B.  Up to 25 points for the creativity of your team's presentation.
C.  Up to 20 points for the humor of your presentation
D.  Up to 20 points for the creativity in your use of the materials.
E.  Up to 25 points for how well your team works together.

Warm-up #8 - WHAT'S IN THE ENTRYWAY CABINET?

Inside the cabinet are things often used in DI. Every team member knows you must have duct tape to hold everything from costumes to scenery together. You team has two minutes to name the most creative uses for duct tape while passing around a roll. They'll receive 1 point for a common use and three points for a creative use. Repeat this exercise at several different meetings to see if the team can improve their scores.

Other things besides duct tape can be used.
